Bring art to life and light by creating wearable sculpture, illuminated musical instruments, and glowing LED wire art. Showcase your creations in the Light Dreams Parade!
3D Animation Creation
Learn basic animation terms and techniques by using Blender’s 3D creation program. You will learn about 3D space, manipulating a virtual camera and creating a natural sense of movement with your animation.
The Fine Art of VJing
Learn the art of creation or manipulation of imagery and 3-D mapping through real-time editing using video jockeying software in synchronization to music. Students will use these skills to VJ at the Light Dreams Festival.
Light the World Workshop
Learn the art of paper lanterns and glow in the dark painting. The result of the work will be an ArtPlay art installment to be featured at Light Dreams Festival.
Acting Out Theatre Workshop
Actor and Educator Darrell Revel will guide participants through the basics of theatre. Students will learn theatre games, improvisation, monologues, scene work, stage make-up application and voice & diction. Best of all, the children will get a chance to showcase their newly developed skills when the workshop culminates with a Showcase Production open to all parents and friends.
Intro to Musical Theatre
Students will learn the basics of musical theatre including basic acting technique, song interpretation, learning music, rhythms, basic dance steps and staging directions. Monologues, scene work, music from the musical theatre repertoire, theatre games, and exercises will be utilized as well. As students learn about various elements and experiment with different musical theatre genres, they will be able to use their newfound techniques to further their love for theatre and the music that surrounds them on stage. Class will culminate in a showcase demonstrating all techniques learned and is open to all parents and friends.
Adventures in Visual Art
Students will experiment in a variety of visual arts genres, from drawing and painting to mixed media and mosaics. The class is for all skill levels and is appropriate for former “Drawing and Painting” students. Price includes supplies
3D: Dream It, Design It, Do It!
Students will explore mixed media, manipulative sculpting activity projects using every day objects, creative process exercises, and experimenting with design techniques. A final group project will be given as an expression of community service to benefit a local charity.
Comic, Character, Creation
Learn the basics of cartooning an rendering characters of a wide variety, from caricatures to comic books. Students will learn to recreate existing characters or design one from their own imagination and bring it to life. Price includes materials.
ArtPlay Elementary Choir
It’s ArtPlay’s first choir! Superstar Mary Elizabeth Neal will teach students a repertoire of 15 – 20 works, including patriotic, sacred, secular and educational pieces. Instruction will focus on tone production, rhythmic reading and performance, basic vocal technique, and knowledge of composers and music history. Class will culminate in a choral concert.
My Journal: The Musical
Students will work together to construct a story and compose lyrics and music for a three to five song musical based on an exceptional day in the life of a typical (pre)teen. Original songs will be recorded in our state-of-the-art media lab. Students will premiere their work in the last class.
Hip Hop Dance
Feel the rhythm. Move to the beat. Have a blast! Students will love getting physically fit while learning the latest dance moves in this fun and age-appropriate hip hop dance class. Class will culminate in a showcase demonstrating all techniques learned and is open to all parents and friends.
A class designed to develop the student’s ability and knowledge to engage in an inter-active world. The goal is to create a place for thoughts, ideas and imagination, a possibility for communication in a tactile, physical, and playful experience.
A 3-dimensional and holistic path to explore and introduce the fundamentals of ballet movement and language. An environment of playfulness, this class introduces the grace and musicality of ballet.
ArtPlay is pleased to offer private instruction in a variety of instruments and artistic disciplines through partnerships with local instructors and music organizations. Lessons range from 30 – 60 minute increments depending on the age and preference of the student. Each instructor is available at varying times throughout the week. Partnership with the UAB Department of Music Through a partnership with the UAB Department of Music, ArtPlay is able to offer additional private instruction in trumpet, trombone, clarinet, flute, saxophone, euphonium, French horn, piano, guitar, and voice. Instructors in this program are UAB students extensively trained in music education and performance in the instrument they will teach.
